SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Each One Does and Why You Need All Three in 2026

SEO ranks your pages, AEO gets you quoted in Google's AI Overviews, and GEO gets ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to name your brand. Here's how they differ and how to do all three.

Short answer: SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in Google's classic results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes your content so Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants can quote it as the answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) builds the brand signals that make AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention you by name. They share one foundation, but each asks for different work.

What SEO still does

Every AI answer engine leans on the open web. If Google can't crawl and trust your pages, neither can the models that summarise them. SEO is still the foundation:

  • Technical health: pages that load fast, work on mobile, can be crawled and have one clear canonical URL.
  • Intent-matched content: one page per search intent, with headings that follow how people actually search.
  • Authority: links and mentions from relevant, trusted sites. In 2026 I built more than 800 backlinks for healthcare brands, because authority still moves rankings.

What AEO adds

AEO is about being quotable. AI Overviews and featured snippets lift short, self-contained passages. Make yours easy to lift:

  1. Put the answer first. Write a 40–60 word direct answer right under the question heading, then expand.
  2. Use the question as the heading, written the way people type or say it.
  3. Format for extraction: numbered steps, short lists and comparison tables.
  4. Add structured data (Article, FAQPage, Person, Organization) so machines read the page the way you intend.
  5. Keep facts consistent. The same price, address or definition should never appear two different ways on one site.

What GEO adds

GEO is about being known. AI assistants recommend brands they can recognise as real entities and find corroborated across many sources.

  • Entity consistency: the same name, description, address, phone and profile links on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook and directories. Connect them with sameAs in your schema.
  • Third-party mentions: reputable directories, industry sites, local news and community discussions.
  • Original, quotable material: your own data, case studies and a clear point of view that others cite.
  • Crawler access: allow the AI crawlers you want citing you in robots.txt, publish an llms.txt summary, and don't hide key content behind scripts.

A real example

When I launched the digital presence for Al-Salwa Pan-Asian Cuisine, a brand-new restaurant in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, it appeared in Google's AI Overview within its first month. There was no trick. Name, address and phone data were identical on every platform, the business descriptions answered real questions, and the Google Business Profile carried clear local keyword signals. Read the full 31-day playbook.

Start this week: a 7-step checklist

  1. In Search Console, find the questions that already bring you impressions.
  2. Rewrite your top five pages with a two-sentence direct answer at the top.
  3. Add an FAQ section built from real customer questions.
  4. Make your name, address, phone and short description identical on every profile.
  5. Add Person or Organization schema with sameAs links to those profiles.
  6. Allow the AI crawlers you want to be cited by, and publish llms.txt.
  7. In GA4, watch referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.

FAQ

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO and GEO sit on top of SEO. Without crawlable, trusted pages there is nothing for an answer engine to quote.

Can a small business do GEO?

Yes. Consistent profiles, a well-filled Google Business Profile, genuine reviews and a few strong local mentions go a long way, especially in local search.

How long does AEO take?

Answer-ready pages can start appearing in snippets and AI Overviews within weeks once Google recrawls them. Competitive organic rankings usually take three to six months.
